Susan M. Swetter, MD, is Professor of Dermatology, Director of the Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Program, and Physician Leader of the Cancer Care Program in Cutaneous Oncology at Stanford University Medical Center and Cancer Institute.

Dr. Swetter obtained her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed an internship in internal medicine at University of California San Francisco, followed by dermatology residency/chief residency at Stanford. She joined the Stanford Dermatology faculty in 1994 and has directed the Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Programs at Stanford and VA Palo Alto Medical Centers since 1995.

Dr. Swetter’s research interests include primary and secondary melanoma prevention strategies and clinical studies of melanoma epidemiology, prognostic factors, and therapeutic prevention. She has published over 200 scholarly articles, reviews, and textbook chapters. Dr. Swetter has served on the NCCN Melanoma Panel since 2007 and is the current Chair; she also chaired the 2019 American Academy of Dermatology melanoma clinical practice guidelines update.

Dr. Swetter co-directs the Melanoma Prevention Working Group, a multi-center, interdisciplinary collaboration dedicated to melanoma control, and she is leading the Wipe Out Melanoma-California statewide initiative targeting high-risk populations for early detection through community engagement and novel technologies, including artificial intelligence/machine learning.
