Steven Nurkin MD, MS

Steven Nurkin, MD, MS, is Chief of Colorectal Surgery, Vice-Chair of Surgical Oncology and Associate Professor of Oncology in the Department of Surgical Oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Nurkin received his medical degree from Technion Faculty of Medicine in Israel and subsequently completed a general surgery residency at New York Hospital Queens/New York Presbyterian Hospital, during which time he served as Chief Resident. He later completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Nurkin specializes in gastrointestinal (GI) pre-cancerous conditions and cancers of the entire GI tract, with a focus in colon, appendix, rectum, and anus. His expertise is in minimally invasive approaches to tumors with advanced endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques, and his clinical research focuses on improving the outcomes and quality of care in patients with cancer.

Dr. Nurkin is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Dr. Nurkin has held several leadership positions at Roswell Park; including Physician Safety Officer, the Chair of the OR Quality Committee, a member of the Hospital Quality Improvement Executive Committee, and a Surgeon Champion of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. He also spearheaded the implementation of the Roswell Park's Enhance Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) initiative to reduce patients' surgical stress responses, optimize their physiologic function, and facilitate recovery.

Dr. Nurkin serves on the NCCN Colon/Rectal/Anal Cancers Panel.
