Stephen C. Yang, MD, holds multiple positions at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, including Professor of Surgery and Oncology, Director of the Thoracic Oncology Program, Associate Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program, and Associate Vice Chair for Faculty Development in the Department of Surgery. He also serves as an Attending Surgeon at both The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Dr. Yang received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his general surgery residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and finished his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia (VCU). He also completed a thoracic surgical oncology research fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Yang's research interests focus on using molecular techniques for lung cancer screening and for staging to predict recurrence following surgery. His clinical practice and research include general thoracic surgery in pulmonary and esophageal surgery, video-assisted and robotics thoracic surgery, mediastinal and pleural work, lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema, and work in geriatric thoracic surgery.
Dr. Yang is a member of numerous surgical and educational societies and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery as Examination Chair. He chairs the Medical Student Education Committee for the American College of Surgeons, and elected as Member to the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. He is the President-Elect for the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. He also is the faculty sponsor for the Surgery Interest Group and the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In addition to editing several text books, he is the Associate Education Editor for the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and has served as a guest reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Yang is a member of the NCCN Lung Cancer Screening Panel and the NCCN Panel for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma, and Thymomas and Thymic Carcinomas.
