Margaret A. Tempero, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Director of the UCSF Pancreas Center at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC). She is Chief Emeritus of the UCSF Division of Medical Oncology and served as the founding Deputy Director and Director of Research Programs at HDFCCC.
Dr. Tempero completed her medical education and post-doctoral training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, receiving a Master's degree in clinical pathology, as well as her medical degree. She later completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in medical oncology.
Dr. Tempero's research focuses on investigational therapeutics for the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers, particularly pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. In addition to her research, Dr. Tempero has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, two books, and 30 book chapters. Additionally, she lectures extensively nationally and internationally and serves as an advisor for research programs at many institutions, including The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, and Jefferson University. She also has served on the Oncology Drug Advisory Committee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Strategic Advisory Committee for EORTC.
Dr. Tempero has held numerous esteemed appointments over the course of her professional career. She previously served as President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and as a member and Chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Tempero currently serves on scientific advisory boards for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the V Foundation, and Pancreatic Cancer UK.
Dr. Tempero has a long-standing history of leadership and service with NCCN. In addition to being a founding member of the NCCN Board of Directors, she has served as Chair of the NCCN Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Panel for the past 20 years. Dr. Tempero is also the Editor-in-Chief of JNCCN - Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and contributes to the NCCN Oncology Research Program (ORP), participating in several scientific review committees as well as ORP working groups. She also serves in an advisory capacity as a member of the NCCN Gastrointestinal Malignancies Advisory Board.
