Gary Deng MD, PhD

Gary Deng, MD, PhD, is Medical Director of the Bendheim Integrative Medicine Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Dr. Deng received his medical degree from Beijing Medical University in China and his Doctorate of Philosophy in microbiology and immunology from the University of Miami. He completed residencies at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and is board-certified in internal medicine.

Dr. Deng is an integrative medicine specialist who strives to inspire and empower people with cancer to make themselves strong in body, mind, and spirit. His professional expertise is in the use of an integrative medicine approach to help patients throughout the continuum of cancer prevention, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care. Dr. Deng incorporates some Eastern medicine approaches that are supported by scientific evidence and focuses on nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, and circadian rhythms. Dr. Deng is recognized as a leader in this emerging and evolving field.

In his current role, Dr. Deng works closely with a team of highly-trained professional therapists who provide acupuncture, massage therapy, mind-body therapies, yoga, qigong, exercise regimens, and music therapy, all of which are tailored to the needs of patients with cancer and cancer survivors. He advises patients on the proper use of herbs and dietary supplements so that they may experience potential benefits while avoiding harm.

Dr. Deng is the Principal Investigator of several research projects on acupuncture, yoga, and botanical/herbal agents. To disseminate knowledge in this field, he supervises MSKCC’s Integrative Medicine Physician Education Program and writes clinical practice guidelines and textbook chapters. Dr. Deng actively participates in the integrative medicine community by giving lectures internationally to professional and lay audiences and by reviewing protocols, manuscripts, and grant applications in his field of expertise. He is a Past-President of the Society for Integrative Oncology.
